Dreams & Intentions 2017
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
When was the last time you set sail from your 'safe-harbor'? Were you scared by what you were about to go do? I’m guessing you survived because you’re reading this, right?
Well, I'll share a little story : A few years back, dear friends invited me and 18 others, to band together and go on an adventure. Our Tribe was to meet up in Arizona and push off from the shore and spend 2 weeks rafting down the Colorado River together. Sounds like an outrageous invitation, right?
Well, it sounded like that to me too until I learned a little more about the Mighty Colorado and to be more specific, the Category 5 Wicked White Water Rapids that Rapidly Render you Helpless, if not dead! These little spots of roiling water are all along the length of the river. There is no skipping over them, no alternative way around them and so, you’re forced to cling for dear life to your little floaty boat while offering up intensely heart felt prayers that your life might be spared.
Are you getting the picture? Yep, I was every bit the chicken. And to make matters worse, it would be months before we’d actually set out to begin our adventure which meant that in the meantime, I fully got into and grew attached to my fear and by the time the flight to Arizona actually came around, I was primed for a melt down. I told the guy sitting next to me, where I was headed, and he had some insights to share about the rapids as he was a navy seal who also knew the River well. I know it was meant to reassure me but, it had the opposite effect, reducing me to tears as my fears broke & washed over me. I was sure I was going to die… very soon…. At the hands of the Mighty Colorado. He apologetically tried to reassure me and he was able to calm me down at least to the point where I could walk and talk without looking outwardly like the mess I was inside.
Fast forward to the end of the 2 weeks. You wouldn't have known me! I was no longer the fearful creature I’d been on that flight. I’d become the person who wants to sit in the very front of the boat as it ducks & dives through the blast of the white water. Quite frankly, I did not know myself. I was a whole new me and that trip became The Signature Trip of a Lifetime and one I’ve recommended to countless others. I lived to tell the tale and then some!
So this is my reassuring story to encourage you, just as I was encouraged, to stretch yourself to your edge while being mindful of it’s dynamics, to dream BIG and to set sail from your safe harbor and go exploring!! You won’t regret it, I promise.
If you’re like me, I like to consider stories like this when I am about to “set sail” on new adventures because they inspire me. This is especially true at the end of the year when I’m looking back over where I’ve been and anticipating what is to come.
I came up with my ‘Dreams & Intentions’ worksheet, that helps me do a little magic and set the stage for what I’d like to accomplish in the coming year. Part of the process is letting go of what has been, part of it is finding something that will take me to my edge and teach me something new about myself. And part of it is about setting some intentions and loosely mapping them out. Through-out the month I’ll come back to this and develop it further until I’ve a fairly decent road map, one that will help me be more effective and see my dreams become more fully realized as well.
If this sound like something you’d be interested in, let me know! I’ll be hosting several evenings in the next month or so, and I love helping people get clear on their goals and create the means by which they’ll see them happen.
Drop me an email or better yet, give me a call if you and a friend would like to be included in one of these fun evenings of ‘Dreams & Intentions’!
